  7.     They seemed like a jolly pair, did manager Don Zimmer of
  8. the Chicago Cubs and Motoshi Fujita, manager of the Yomiuri
  9. Giants, as they embraced at an all-star game between the
  10. Americans and the Japanese in Tokyo. But the smiles soon
  11. vanished as the Japanese team rolled over the Major League team
  12. last week with a hefty four-game lead in the eight-match series.
  13. The American squad, which included Oakland pitcher Dave Stewart
  14. and Detroit home-run king Cecil Fielder, pleaded jet lag before
  15. they finally notched a 10-5 win in the fifth game and a 6-6 tie
  16. in the sixth. The puzzled Japanese at first thought the
  17. Americans were toying with them, but manager Zimmer gives credit
  18. due: "We are playing as hard as we can, but the Japanese teams
  19. have gotten much stronger." Will baseball go the way of the
  20. transistor?
